Cobar Shire is a big stretch of outback NSW with one main town, a handful of small villages, mines and sheep and goat country. Most vehicles here are work utes, 4WDs and trucks, so the auto electrical work leans towards heat, dust, long distances and heavy-duty accessories.

Suburbs in Cobar

Cobar Shire covers more than 44,000 square kilometres, and Cobar town sits where the Barrier Highway crosses the Kidman Way. The town has around 3,400 people and a mining history going back to the copper find of 1870. South of town, Nymagee is a small village with its own copper past. Highways in and out are sealed, but much of the shire's road network is gravel or natural surface. Heat, dust, corrugations and long gaps between towns shape most of the auto electrical work, and spare parts are not always just down the road.

Common auto electrical jobs in Cobar

Out here the jobs follow the conditions: summer heat, red dust, long highway runs and a working fleet of utes and trucks.

Batteries that give up in summer

The Bureau of Meteorology's Cobar station averages about 48 days a year at 35°C or more. Heat speeds up the chemistry inside a lead-acid battery, so it wears out sooner, and the failure often shows up as a no-start on a cool morning after a run of hot days. A quick load test before summer is cheap insurance in a town where the next big parts supplier is hours away. Our guide how to test a car battery explains what the numbers mean.

Work utes built for the mines and stations

A lot of Cobar's vehicles go to work every day, whether that is a mine site, a station or a contract job out on the gravel. They carry UHF radios, beacons, work lights, fridges and sometimes inverters. Every one of those adds load, and every cable run through a dusty, shaking tray is a chance for a fault. Fused, relayed circuits with sealed connectors hold up far better than wiring that has been added one job at a time.

Driving lights for dawn and dusk

Kangaroos, goats and stock are a real hazard on the roads around Cobar, especially around sunrise and sunset. Many locals fit driving lights or a light bar to see further. In NSW, aftermarket driving lamps must switch off automatically with high beam, and there are limits on how many you can fit. Wire them through a relay and fuse, and check Transport for NSW's vehicle standards information before you buy.
